Current Bad News About Pakistan's Beautiful City (SWAT VALLEY) It was know as Switzerland of Pakistan

Residents flee as unrest spreads in Swat

Main City of Swat (MINGORA): Authorities Saturday recovered the bodies of 13 persons including six law-enforcement personnel killed by militants a day earlier in different localities of Matta, sources said.

Among the killed security officials, three were FC personnel and the same number of policemen. The bodies of some of the deceased were dragged by the miscreants in Shakardara bazaar, the sources said.

Sirajuddin, spokesman for Maulana Fazlullah, said seven other people kidnapped Friday from the same minibus had also been killed, but there was no immediate confirmation from officials.

The spokesman claimed the killings were carried out by local residents who back the Maulana Fazlullah's objectives.

"It (the killing) was done by common people, who support us because we only want enforcement of Islamic laws," Sirajuddin told a foreign news agency.

Another local security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he feared for his safety, said militants paraded the severed heads in the bazaar of the nearby town of Matta.

In the meanwhile, Maulana Fazlullah, who shortened his visit and returned from Kohistan, has agreed to hold peace talks with authorities on condition that the government would implement Shariah (Islamic law) in the valley.

Sources, however, revealed that trade of fire resumed between security forces and local Taliban after hours of lull in Imam Dheri.

In the wee hours of Saturday, Taliban cordoned off and set on fire the house of district nazim Shangwatai, Matta, Jamal Nasir Khan, however, no casualty was reported as the nazim had shifted to Islamabad few days back after an attack on him.

Authorities Saturday dropped leaflets from a helicopter in Imam Dehri and its surrounding areas urging residents to help police and paramilitary forces eliminate extremism and terrorism from the Swat valley.

"You must remember that establishing Islamic courts, implementation of Shariah and bringing peace is the first priority of the government," it said in the local Pashtu language.

Taliban spokesman denied the cleric's involvement in the bombing, saying he wanted peace in the region and only wanted to impose Islamic law.

"If the government agrees to enforce Islam, we will lay down arms today," Sirajuddin said. He demanded the release of Sufi Muhammad, Fazlullah's father-in-law who was jailed in 2002 for having sent thousands of volunteers to Afghanistan during the US-led invasion in 2001.

On Saturday, this scribe visited Fazlullah's sprawling seminary at Imam Dheri, which was being guarded by dozens of militants. The seminary was not damaged by Friday's fighting.

Militants armed with AK-47 assault rifles and submachine guns manned checkpoints on the road leading to Imam Dheri and checked every vehicle. Other long-haired and bearded fighters, wearing turbans and covering their faces, stood at the roadside.

In another development, unknown persons surrounded police check post in Char Bagh Bazar and targeted it with rockets and automatic weapons.

Series of explosions were also resumed in Kabal and adjoining areas and residents started fleeing from Koza Banda and Barah Banda areas.

APP adds: NWFP Secretary Home Badshah Gul Wazir Saturday said situation in Swat on was quite normal as no incident of exchange of fire was reported in the valley.

He said one incident of firing was reported last night when militants attacked a check post in Char Bagh area. Secretary Home said a group of militants equipped with heavy weapons attacked the check post established in the area for maintenance of peace. The post was manned by 20 FC personnel and 10 policemen, who effectively retaliated fire for three hours as a result of which attacking militants retreated and later escaped from the scene.

He said situation in Matta, Char Bagh and Sambat was tense where the security forces faced resistance.

The militants, he continued, have taken positions on hilltops in Sambat, Mariam and Khwazakhela areas.

Forces deployed in the area, Gul continued, were directed to show maximum restraint and fully avoid collateral damage in case of any encounter with the militants
